NAMI Walk May 1st!

Published by admin under Announcements

This message from an active and dedicated NAMI member:

On May 1, 2010, I am participating in an event that is both very important and very exciting to me.  It is NAMIWalks for the Mind of America, NAMI’s signature walkathon event that is being held at Lake Lily in Maitland, Florida.

NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the largest education, support and advocacy organization that serves the needs of all those whose lives are touched by these illnesses.  This includes persons with mental illness, their families, friends, employers, the law enforcement community and policy makers.  The NAMI organization is composed of approximately 1100 local affiliates, 50 state offices and a national office.

I am walking for my daughter who has been diagnosed with mental illness. With the help and support of NAMI, we continue to be educated about these serious brain disorders. Their weekly support groups for families and consumers like my daughter continue to be a part of our lives, where we can express ourselves and be understood without being judged.

I would like to ask you to come and walk with me or to donate to support my participation in this great event. Visit my personal walker page to sign up. It features a link to my team’s page where you can see who else is walking with me. There is also a link so you can donate directly to me online. Donating online is fast and secure, and I will get immediate notification via e-mail of your donation. Checks are also accepted and should be made payable to NAMI Greater Orlando.
The goals of the NAMIWalks program are to fight the stigma that surrounds mental illness, to build awareness of the fact that the mental health system in this country needs to be improved, and to raise funds for NAMI so that they can continue their mission.

NAMI is a 501(c) 3 charity and any donation you make to support my participation in this event is tax deductible.  NAMI has been rated by Worth magazine as among the top 100 charities “most likely to save the world” and has been given an “A” rating by The American Institute of Philanthropy for efficient and effective use of charitable dollars.
For more information on this worthy cause, please visit click here. If you wish to make a donation by check, the mailing address is NAMI Greater Orlando, 1800 Mercy Drive #103, Mailbox 4, Orlando, FL 32808.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,
NAMI Member

Upcoming BPD Conference!

Published by admin under Announcements

This from Amanda Smith, President of the Florida Borderline Personality Disorder Association:
Please join us at St. Petersburg College’s EpiCenter in Clearwater on Friday, April 23 at 8:00 am for our latest conference.

While borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex and serious mental illness, it’s important for healthcare professionals to understand that BPD is also highly treatable. This one-day conference will provide an overview of evidence-based treatment and care practices that actively promote and encourage recovery. At the conclusion of the program attendees will be able to describe the longitudinal course of BPD including etiology, prognosis, and remittance of DSM-IV-TR criteria over the course of the illness; describe the role of neuroplasticity in effective treatment; outline a theoretical model of recovery; and identify the obstacles to recovery from a patient’s perspective.

Individuals diagnosed with BPD and their families are strongly encouraged to attend.

· The Good Prognosis Diagnosis: Exploring the Myths Surrounding BPD. Stacy Louk, PhD
